There is a change in the air. Social media grew up in 2009, but I predict that it will grow locally in 2010. Say what? A new wave of social media sites have started popping up lately that look they are gaining speed for making the internet no longer just the global web, but bringing it back to a local web of communities coming together.
Yelp.com has been getting the most press, since the site has become a destination for locals and tourists to find the best food, drink, shopping, and other places of interest in their neighborhood. People who have gone to a restaurant can then rank the eatery and give a brief description of what their experience was like. Local businesses that have focused on quality are now thriving from the increased visits they get as happy customers can then rate their store and push them above other stores.
Past Yelp the field has been opened with Foursquare, which is similar to Yelp, except for the site chooses your top user as a mayor and gives them special attention. In my mind that is the equivalent to creating a superfan to advertise your business. Additionally you have going and Brightkite. Going is great for local events where you can find out about more social events in your area. It is like meetup.com, except for a more hipper crowd. Brightkite is nice for businesses looking to micro target customers.
Take together the rash of new location based social networks is creating a return to communities for increasing your communication with people in your neighborhood. Ironically we will be turning more and more towards location based social network online to talk to our neighbor that we are looking at on the computer next door. It is a strange world, but at least the internet is finally finding a way to revitalize the community.
